Fantasy football may be finished, but real players know the fantasy grind is just getting hot. In this week’s draft breakdown, I dove into a stacked 12 team points league mock, cooked up some value picks, and came out with strategies every savvy manager needs to hit the ground running.
The Open: Top Tier Surprises and Smart Anchors
Jokic went first overall, as expected, and even earned the honorary air horn. But number two brought the first shocker, with Luka snatched up right before SGA and Wemby rounded out the top four. Holding pick six, I locked in Cade Cunningham, a call I’ve grown more confident about with each mock. He’s the new nucleus for points league builds, and this year he looks ready to make the leap.
Second round, I grabbed Steph Curry, showing love to the old legends still capable of putting the fantasy team on their back. LeBron, Durant, and Booker all went soon after. If you can scoop up one of these icons in round two, the foundation gets a big boost. Many drafters are sleeping on Karl-Anthony Towns lately; if he drops, it is time to swoop. Do not overthink it.
Early Season Riser and Steals
Devin Booker making an appearance at the end of the first round proves sharp drafters want elite consistency, even if it comes with less flash than a rookie. Donovan Mitchell, a player whose ADP has been weirdly volatile all offseason, has climbed back into his proper draft slot. Elsewhere, LaMelo Ball and Scottie Barnes went in the third, giving managers that rare mix of big upside and reliable weekly lines.
Wild Cards and Hype Trains
This mock had some real curveballs. Jaylen Johnson slipped from former second round locked-in status to the third, signaling a shifting landscape of target value. Josh Giddey, now flush with a big contract, was quickly scooped. That Bulls system should be friendly for his stats, but the hype is becoming real. Meanwhile, former stars like Adebayo, DeRozan and Holiday come with floor but not the ceiling they once offered.
Middle Rounds: Wings, Risks, and Gut Picks
Time to let the upside loose. I grabbed Brandon Miller and OG Anunoby, both high ceiling multi-position talents. In these rounds, you want dynamic talent and runway for a breakout, especially in points formats.
Late Round Wisdom: Rookies, Big Swings, No Fear
This is not the time for vanilla. Grab the rookie with mystery upside. My ninja trick every season: last three rounds, draft first, second, or third year players who could break out. When the dust settles in November, early waiver gems often erase your late mistakes, so make those final picks spicy. I went big for Stefon Castle, VJ Edgecombe, Herb Jones, and dug deep for Jay Huff’s upside. If you land that surprise gem or the rookie takes off, you’re way ahead of most leagues by week three.
Team Audit: The Famous GOAT Scale
Here’s the straight truth. Cade, Steph, Chet, Bam, and Miller make for a tight core. OG and Hartenstein bring solid glue. Late in the draft, I gambled and swung for the fences with Sharp, Castle, Edgecombe, and closed with Draymond. The final call? Three out of five goats. There is floor, there is upside, but just enough risk to keep me honest.
Final Thought: Stream Like a Pro, Swing on Upside
Early rounds are for stability, but when it gets wild, lean into risk and youth. Stream your roster, play the wire ruthlessly, and never stop searching for that next lottery ticket in your last three picks. Stay hungry and trust your basketball gut.
Keep your questions coming for next week’s mailbag, and keep it BLEAV, where we draft sharp and play even sharper.
