Fantasy drafts are complete, and managers are greatly anticipating the chance to watch their team perform. Inevitably, some of your higher picks will eventually be dropped as the season progresses, for numerous reasons that the fantasy gods decide.
Fantasy 365 & Papi Roi team up to discuss 10+ players drafted in standard leagues that might be droppable within the first month of the season. We’re not necessarily predicting that to be the case, but we’ll feature 10 players that were on everyone’s draft boards, where we see a path to their production being much lower than their ADP suggested.
Fantasy 365 says…
Kel’El Ware
Erik Spoelstra has had several negative quotes about Kel’El Ware in the preseason, specifically questioning his fit playing in lineups with Bam. Ware’s key to standard league fantasy value is playing 8+ minutes alongside Bam per game. I think Ware’s playing time will have large fluctuations throughout the season, and we could be reflecting after the first month, wondering if it’s even worth it.
Papi Roi says…
Mark Williams
The experiment will fail. He will still miss a good amount of games. There was a reason why the Lakers did not proceed in acquiring Mark-Wil last season, and Phoenix will be understanding what that reason was firsthand this season. As good and as big as William’s upside was, his body is just not built for heavy, consistent minutes for the whole season. His recent limit was 44 games of around 25 minutes per game. Somehow, the Suns knew this could really happen, hence the Maluach pick.
Fantasy 365 says…
Brandin Podziemski
I think Golden State will start Moody over Podziemski if Moody is healthy, which severely limits Podziemski’s upside. Podziemski has never had consistent playing time since he joined the league, and the fluctuations in his role might be too dramatic to sustain.
Papi Roi says…
Kyle Filipowski
Filipowski will not have many opportunities until the last few months of the year. Utah’s front court is just too tight. And this season could be the year where Markannen plays more to squeeze as much value as he can for an inevitable trade by this year’s deadline. He is probably one of the first popular flier picks that’s gonna be dropped as early as the first couple of weeks.
Fantasy 365 says…
Shaedon Sharpe
This one is probably the least likely on the list, but there is definitely a path. Sharpe has played a large role in each of his first 3 seasons, and his production has been low-end at best. I expect his role to be larger in Portland, and I also expect Sharpe to take an enormous leap this season. That being said, you’re relying on both of those factors to occur for him to return value at ADP. I’ve drafted Sharpe in a few leagues, but I have no idea what to expect.
Papi Roi says…
Adem Bona
Bona’s defensive upside is just mouth-watering. But he will be too limited to warrant a must-roster spot in standards. Yes, Embiid might not play all or most of Philly’s B2B games, but take note that Drummond is still on the roster. Trendon Watford is also in the mix for possible small-ball lineups. Bona might end up giving the Paul Reed experience to his owners, at least for this season
Fantasy 365 says…
Jalen Suggs
Suggs is out opening night, and the ramp-up period and rested games might not be worth it to hold onto him. If you don’t have an open IL spot, I wouldn’t consider it at all. There’s nearly no chance he replicates his numbers from last season, and I expect his production to be closer to fringe this season. Fringe production with the downside of lower minutes & rested games is not a must roster player.
Papi Roi says…
Jay Huff & Isaiah Jackson
Huff and IJax will eat each other’s value the whole year, making them unrosterable in most standard and shallow leagues. Aside from Rick Carlisle’s comfort level to adjust lineups depending on matchups, he was very open to also give Toppin and Siakam center minutes in his small ball lineup, and he already did this several times last year.
Fantasy 365 says…
Collin Sexton
Sexton was drafted in the majority of leagues, and I’m not sure why. He’s not going to start in Charlotte, and he’s not guaranteed to be a must-roster player, even if he were to receive 30+ minutes. His 9cat fantasy game is limited, and he will be right back on the waiver wire after week 1.
Papi Roi says…
Ryan Kalkbrenner & Moussa Diabate
Same thing with Charlotte. Hornet’s Bigs are just a mix of bag. Uncle Mason is a better P and R big but older, Kalbrenner plays better defense but is too raw, Diabate is their best rebounder but lacks offensive instincts. Despite showing samples of good games during the preseason, Ryan and Moussa are both raw and have weaknesses that make it hard to give either full center minutes.
